Stora Enso’s Earth Day 2025 Sustainability Commitment

Stora Enso replace non-renewable materials with renewable products for the good of people and the planet. Using all of a tree resource-efficiently, they are experts in creating renewable materials that store carbon, can be recycled, and regenerate as new forest is planted. The company accelerates the needed transition to a circular bioeconomy. On Earth Day 2025, themed “Our Power, Our Planet”, they are reminded of the crucial role of cutting their emissions to reinforce the circularity of our products.

To strengthen the renewable nature of their materials, they set their ambition to align with the 1.5-degree scenario of the Paris Agreement in 2021. Their target is to halve the emissions from their direct operations and purchased energy (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030, compared to the 2019 baseline. This target was reached for the first time in 2024, when they achieved a 53% reduction in these emissions. A similar target is set for indirect Scope 3 emissions in the value chain, with the 2024 reduction at 39%.

This milestone reflects their long-term commitment to proactive decarbonisation efforts through numerous smaller actions, such as:
  • investing in, and modernising production equipment for resource efficiency,
  • switching to biofuels in production,
  • use of renewable energy sources,
  • powering our transport with biogas, electricity and hydrogen fuels,
  • developing ways to monitor our performance to maintain and improve our progress.
Some concrete examples:
Fors mill in Sweden became their first fossil-free board mill in 2017, whereas the Ala mill in Sweden became the first fossil-free saw mill in 2024 (Scope 1&2 for both).

Going forward with collaboration and circular design
Their work to cut emissions does not end here. The company strives to improve its own performance as well as working with its suppliers to halve its emissions in the value chain.

They continuously innovate for more resource-efficiency, designing for recycling and long lifecycles to keep the carbon stored as long as possible. While new forests, planted after final fellings, continue to absorb carbon as they grow. All this goes to show how several small actions can together contribute to a impact.
