Renewable pulp improves fiber cement and filtration
Construction and filter manufacturers adopt Stora Enso’s Nova F pulp for strength, purity, and lower carbon footprint.

Manufacturers of fiber cement boards and filtration media operate in technically demanding environments. In construction, fiber cement panels must combine mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and durability under variable weather conditions. In filtration, pulp fibers must create a stable porous structure while maintaining purity and process consistency.
These requirements place constraints on raw material selection. Fiber morphology, fiber length, purity level, and process consistency directly influence board reinforcement performance and filter efficiency. At the same time, manufacturers are under increasing pressure to reduce the carbon footprint of materials and ensure traceability within the pulp and paper supply chain.
Selection of a high-purity unbleached kraft pulp
To address these challenges, customers in both sectors have deployed Nova F, an unbleached, low-kappa kraft pulp produced at Stora Enso’s Enocell production unit in Finland.
Previously marketed under a different name, the grade has been used in fiber cement applications and is now positioned more broadly for both construction and filtration markets. The decision to adopt this pulp grade is linked to specific fiber characteristics and sustainability parameters rather than branding changes.
Nova F is characterized by long, stiff fibers exceeding 2.3 mm in length. In fiber cement production, this fiber structure contributes to reinforcement efficiency and dimensional stability of boards. In filtration applications, the same morphology supports the formation of a controlled porous matrix required for airflow and particle retention.
According to Eero Ollila, Product Director at Stora Enso, the grade was “designed for demanding end uses in construction and filtration,” reflecting its intended dual application profile.
Integration into industrial processes
The pulp is part of Stora Enso’s broader Nova family of high-purity unbleached kraft pulps, which are designed for specialized technical uses. Its low-kappa and high-purity characteristics support process consistency, an important factor in automated board forming lines and filter media production where raw material variability can affect throughput and quality.
Production at the Finnish facility relies on certified renewable wood, ensuring full traceability. The grade is food-contact approved and compliant with Nordic and EU environmental standards, which is relevant for filtration applications and for manufacturers operating under strict regulatory frameworks.
Although specific deployment timelines or site details are not disclosed, the material has been validated in real-world industrial use by customers in both construction and filtration sectors.
Measurable sustainability impact
Beyond performance, sustainability criteria influenced material selection. Compared to bleached kraft pulp, Nova F has an approximately 30% lower carbon footprint. For manufacturers seeking to reduce Scope 3 emissions within their value chain, this reduction can contribute directly to corporate climate targets.
The use of unbleached pulp also reduces chemical processing intensity, while maintaining the mechanical performance required for structural and filtration applications.
Dual-industry application strategy
While fiber cement boards and filtration media serve different markets, both require strength, structural integrity, and raw material purity. By deploying a single renewable pulp grade capable of meeting both sets of technical criteria, manufacturers can streamline procurement while maintaining product performance.
The repositioning of the grade under the Nova F name aligns it with a portfolio strategy emphasizing specialized pulp solutions for technical industries. For construction material producers and filter manufacturers, the adoption reflects a combination of fiber performance, regulatory compliance, and reduced carbon intensity within renewable pulp sourcing.
