Eni Rewind and Herambiente developed an environmental hub to optimize industrial waste treatment and resource recovery. This digital infrastructure and processing network establishes localized capacity for managing special solid and liquid waste streams.

Operational Context and Partnership Roles
The partnership addresses a structural shortage of specialized industrial waste treatment facilities within Italy. Eni Rewind, the environmental subsidiary of Eni, provided land remediation and technical site preparation for a 26-hectare decommissioned petrochemical site. Herambiente, through its subsidiary Herambiente Servizi Industriali, integrated its waste management logistics and technology. The companies formed a joint venture, HEA, to construct and operate a multifunctional pretreatment platform.

Technical Specifications of the HEA Platform
The HEA platform replaces an older storage facility with a multi-line plant configuration designed for storage, repackaging, shredding, and mixing.

The technical parameters include:
  • Processing Capacity: Up to 60,000 tons of special industrial and remediation waste per year.
  • Input Streams: Both solid and liquid hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste.
  • Operational Mechanism: The multi-line architecture allows simultaneous sorting and conditioning to prepare waste for material recovery, minimizing landfill reliance.

Biorecovery and Soil Remediation Facility
The hub integrates a specialized biorecovery plant managed by Eni Rewind. This facility processes up to 80,000 tons per year of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils.

The system relies on an aerobic biodegradation process:
  • Microorganisms break down hydrocarbons under controlled oxygen and moisture levels.
  • The treated soil is stabilized until it meets environmental standards.
  • The remediated soil is reused as backfill material on site, reducing the requirement for virgin quarry materials.
Co-located Renewable Infrastructure and Energy Storage
Plenitude, an Eni subsidiary, integrated a 6 MWp photovoltaic installation covering 11 hectares of the hub. The array consists of over 10,000 bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers to maximize irradiance capture. The structural mounts are engineered to sit directly on top of the impermeable safety capping layer without compromising the environmental containment barrier.

To manage intermittency, an experimental energy storage system utilizing vanadium flow batteries was connected to the photovoltaic array in April 2026. This battery technology utilizes the valence states of vanadium in electrochemical cells to store and release energy, providing long-duration storage capacity to support the hub's industrial automation systems.

Implementation Timeline
Redevelopment of the Ca' Ponticelle area began with environmental remediation by Eni Rewind in 2019. Permanent safety capping and containment infrastructure were secured in 2021. Following municipal zoning updates in 2023, construction of the industrial facilities commenced. Testing and final commissioning phases are scheduled for completion in July 2026.
