Kawasaki Starts World First Centrifugal Hydrogen Compressor Demonstration For Liquefaction

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has officially launched demonstrations of its KM Comp-H2 at the Harima Works in Hyogo Prefecture, marking a significant shift in how the industry approaches hydrogen liquefaction. As the world’s first centrifugal compressor specifically designed for large-scale hydrogen liquefaction plants, this technology directly addresses the primary bottleneck of the global hydrogen supply chain: the lack of high-capacity, space-efficient compression equipment. Developed as part of a NEDO-sponsored Green Innovation Fund Project, the KM Comp-H2 offers a high-efficiency alternative to existing market solutions, which have historically struggled to manage large volumes of refrigerant hydrogen gas within the confined footprints required for industrial expansion.

Compact Design and Superior Compression Ratios
The fundamental differentiator of the KM Comp-H2 lies in its ultra-high-speed rotation, which allows for a much higher compression ratio than traditional mechanical counterparts. This engineering breakthrough solves the "space-to-capacity" problem that has long plagued hydrogen infrastructure. By utilizing a next-generation centrifugal design, Kawasaki has managed to shrink the necessary installation footprint to approximately one-seventh of the space required by existing hydrogen compressors. This radical reduction in size enables facility operators to scale up capacity significantly without the prohibitive land and infrastructure costs associated with conventional bulky equipment.

Efficiency Gains and Energy Reduction
Beyond its physical footprint, the KM Comp-H2 focuses on lowering the operational costs that often hinder the adoption of pure hydrogen energy. Through the integration of high-efficiency impellers and an optimized gas cooling system, the unit achieves a 3% to 4% reduction in annual electricity consumption compared to current technologies. In a 100% pure hydrogen environment, these incremental efficiency gains are vital for reducing the overall supply cost of hydrogen gas, making it a more competitive energy source for large-scale carbon-neutral initiatives.

Versatility Across the Global Hydrogen Supply ChainWhile the current demonstrations focus on liquefaction, the KM Comp-H2 is engineered for a wide range of industrial applications that existing compressors cannot easily accommodate. Its design is compatible with high-pressure pipelines, underground storage, oil refineries, and steelworks. Kawasaki intends to integrate this compressor into a broader ecosystem that includes hydrogen-powered turbines, engines, and carrier vessels. By verifying performance and safety across 150 square meters of demonstration space — testing for reliability during long-term continuous operation and a processing flow rate of 35,000 m3/h — Kawasaki is positioning this technology as the central link in a global, end-to-end carbon-neutral supply chain.
