ENGIE and La Caisse, through their joint venture First Hydro Company, have selected GE Vernova to modernize the first two generating units at the Dinorwig pumped storage hydropower plant in North Wales, UK. The project supports long-term hydropower modernization and strengthens grid infrastructure for renewable energy integration.

Technical Scope and Partner Roles

First Hydro Company, jointly owned by ENGIE and La Caisse, is responsible for the long-term refurbishment programme and operation of the facility. GE Vernova will supply and integrate upgraded electromechanical equipment, including two new 315 MW pumped storage units, motor generators, pump turbines and associated plant systems.

The modernization programme addresses ageing equipment at the more than 40-year-old facility while maintaining its fast-response capability for electricity grid balancing. Cooperation between the partners combines asset ownership, plant operation and hydropower engineering expertise required for large-scale infrastructure refurbishment.

Technical Solution
GE Vernova will replace two generating units and refurbish embedded hydraulic components, including the spiral case, stay ring and draft tube. The project also includes an upgraded plant control system together with new low-voltage, medium-voltage and DC power supply systems.

Engineering activities are distributed across GE Vernova's facilities, with pump turbines designed in Grenoble, France, and motor generators engineered in Birr, Switzerland. Additional systems include variable frequency starting equipment from Germany, protection systems from Spain and generator shaft manufacturing in Switzerland.

Implementation
The modernization follows successful model test validation of the pumped storage unit at GE Vernova's testing laboratory in Grenoble, France. The work forms part of First Hydro Company's wider refurbishment programme covering all six generating units and associated infrastructure upgrades at the Dinorwig facility.

The project is expected to extend the operational life of the power station by at least 25 years while improving equipment reliability, availability and operating efficiency.

Applications and Operational Benefits
Dinorwig is one of Europe's largest pumped storage hydropower plants and provides rapid-response energy storage for the UK electricity network. The station can deliver up to 1,320 MW within 12 seconds from standby and up to 1,800 MW in less than one minute, supporting frequency regulation, grid resilience and renewable energy integration.

Together with the Ffestiniog pumped storage station, the facilities operated by First Hydro Company provide approximately 2.1 GW of installed capacity, representing around 74% of the UK's pumped storage hydropower capacity.
