Wind power infrastructure for Italy’s renewable energy sector
In the renewable energy and wind power sectors, turbine design and transport logistics often determine whether large projects can be deployed in geographically complex regions. GE Vernova Inc. has secured a contract with Italian renewable energy operator IVPC Group to supply turbines for the Fortore wind farm in Benevento, Italy.

The project will deploy 17 onshore wind turbines rated at 6.1 MW each, representing more than 100 MW of installed capacity. It was among the largest wind developments awarded in the December 2025 auction organized by Italy’s energy agency, Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE). Turbine deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027.

Turbine platform designed for large-scale onshore wind farms
The Fortore wind farm will use GE Vernova’s 6 MW platform equipped with a rotor diameter of 158 meters. This turbine configuration is designed to balance high energy yield with installation feasibility in areas where transport routes and site access may impose logistical constraints.

A key feature of the platform is its two-piece blade technology. By splitting each blade into two transportable sections, the design reduces the logistical challenges associated with transporting long blades through mountainous terrain or narrow infrastructure corridors. This approach allows developers to deploy large rotor turbines in sites that may otherwise be difficult to access while maintaining aerodynamic performance and energy capture.

For wind farm developers, such configurations can help maximize annual energy production while simplifying transport and installation operations.

Customized operations and maintenance strategy
The agreement also includes a tailored operations and maintenance (O&M) arrangement. Under this model, GE Vernova and IVPC Group will collaborate on maintenance activities, allowing the project owner to take responsibility for certain transactional maintenance tasks.

This hybrid service structure can provide operators with greater flexibility in managing operational costs while still benefiting from the original equipment manufacturer’s technical expertise and support.

Expanding collaboration with IVPC Group
The Fortore project follows earlier collaboration between the two companies on the Montefalcone wind farm in Italy. That project recently installed the first Cypress 6.1 MW wind turbine in the country as part of a repowering program designed to upgrade existing turbines.

Repowering projects typically involve replacing older turbines with newer, higher-capacity models to increase electricity generation while extending the operational life of existing wind farm sites. Up to five turbines are expected to be upgraded at the Montefalcone installation.

Together, the new Fortore development and the repowering activities at Montefalcone highlight the growing role of high-capacity turbines in modernizing Europe’s onshore wind infrastructure.

Global turbine deployment and Italian operations
GE Vernova’s onshore wind division has installed approximately 59,000 turbines worldwide, representing nearly 120 GW of capacity. The company continues to expand its presence in Italy, where it is currently delivering and installing projects totaling around 135 MW.

Local support for wind farm operators is provided through a service network that includes a Center of Excellence in Troia, Foggia, along with additional operational sites across the country. These facilities provide maintenance support aimed at reducing downtime and maintaining turbine performance.

Through new wind developments and repowering projects, turbine manufacturers and renewable energy operators are working to increase electricity production from existing sites while supporting Italy’s broader transition toward low-carbon power generation.
