Technip Energies, Alterra, and Neste have launched Nerea™, a standardized industrial product model designed to accelerate the deployment of chemical recycling projects for plastic waste. The solution converts heterogeneous and hard-to-recycle plastic waste into high-quality feedstock for the refining and petrochemical industries.

Context of the Cooperation
Global plastics production has nearly doubled over the past two decades, reaching approximately 431 million tonnes in 2024. Circularity rates are not keeping pace with continuing consumption growth, resulting in significant volumes of plastic waste that end up in incinerators, landfills, or the environment. Concurrently, regulatory developments in Europe and elsewhere are driving stronger demand for recycled and circular feedstocks.

To overcome these challenges and enable waste operators, project developers, refining, and petrochemical players to scale circular plastic production with enhanced predictability, a collaborative approach was established. The initiative builds on a collaboration agreement signed by Technip Energies, Alterra, and Neste in November 2024, combining their complementary technical expertise to transition chemical recycling from bespoke engineering to a standardized product model.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities
The technological solution is Nerea™, which features a standardized, modular plant design engineered to minimize pre-investment and reduce project complexity while providing greater predictability for cost and schedule parameters. Responsibilities are divided across the partners to integrate proprietary recycling science with industrial-scale delivery:
  • Alterra provides its thermochemical liquefaction technology, which has demonstrated more than five years of continuous commercial operation processing real-world plastic waste streams.
  • Neste contributes its specialized chemical recycling expertise.
  • Technip Energies delivers its core engineering, project delivery, and modularization capabilities.
At a system level, the Nerea™ platform functions by taking heterogeneous and hard-to-recycle plastic waste feedstocks and processing them through Alterra's thermochemical liquefaction layer to output high-quality, circular raw materials optimized for petrochemical manufacturing.

The implementation strategy focuses on rapid deployment across a wide variety of industrial environments. By utilizing a standardized product layout rather than site-specific bespoke engineering, the Nerea™ plant reduces project initialization timelines and ensures seamless integration with existing refining and petrochemical infrastructure.
