A consortium of technology companies has completed a research project focused on developing new technologies for the generation, storage, and safe operation of green hydrogen plants, with the goal of improving efficiency, reliability, and operational lifespan of these energy infrastructures.
Completed in June 2025, the project addressed several key technological challenges related to the industrial production of renewable hydrogen. The research covered areas such as power electronics equipment, electrolysis stacks, purification systems, compression and storage solutions, advanced safety systems, digital twins, and overall plant balance optimization. In addition, new strategies were explored to recover and utilize residual heat generated by electrolyzers, aiming to increase overall plant efficiency and extend the operational life of industrial hydrogen production facilities.
Power Electronics for Direct Hydrogen Production
In this context, Ingeteam led the research activities related to power electronics and control technologies for the direct generation of green hydrogen using photovoltaic energy.
The work focused on evaluating and selecting suitable energy conversion topologies for this type of application, as well as analyzing the operation of a hydrogen production plant powered by solar energy. One of the key aspects studied was the impact of the intermittent and variable nature of photovoltaic power generation on electrolysis systems and on the overall plant performance.
Collaborative Project Supporting the Energy Transition
The project had a total budget of €6,204,683 and was carried out over 32 months, from November 2022 until its completion in June 2025.
In addition to Ingeteam Power Technology, the consortium brought together several companies specializing in different areas of the energy and industrial technology ecosystem, including ABC Compressors, Iberdrola, Inerco, IDESA, and Innomerics.
Through collaboration between engineering, energy, and technology companies, the initiative contributed to the development of integrated solutions aimed at accelerating the industrial deployment of green hydrogen, a key technology for decarbonizing industry and advancing sustainable energy systems.
