Daimler Buses Expands Solar Power at Neu-Ulm Plant

In the bus manufacturing and industrial production sector, reducing energy consumption and integrating renewable power sources have become central to site-level sustainability strategies. Daimler Buses has commissioned a new photovoltaic system at its Neu-Ulm plant, significantly increasing the share of locally generated renewable electricity used in daily operations.

Rooftop solar installation with industrial-scale output
The photovoltaic system consists of 1,107 solar modules installed across more than 2,700 square meters of rooftop space on the administration building and the delivery hall. With a total installed capacity of approximately 640 kilowatt-peak (kWp), the system is designed to generate around 680 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity per year under typical operating conditions.

This output corresponds to a substantial portion of the site’s electricity requirements and is directly consumed on site, reducing reliance on externally supplied power.

Covering baseload demand with on-site generation
During regular operations, the solar installation supplies enough electricity to cover the energy needs of both the canteen and the entire administration building. On non-production days, when manufacturing activities are paused, the system is capable of covering the complete baseload demand of the Neu-Ulm site.

By prioritizing self-consumption, the installation improves overall energy efficiency and enhances resilience against fluctuations in electricity prices and grid availability.

Part of a broader energy efficiency strategy
The commissioning of the photovoltaic system reflects Daimler Buses’ broader approach to energy efficiency and environmental protection at its manufacturing locations. Rooftop solar generation allows industrial sites to utilize existing infrastructure while contributing to emissions reduction without interfering with core production processes.

At Neu-Ulm, the new installation demonstrates how medium-scale photovoltaic systems can be effectively integrated into industrial facilities to deliver measurable energy and sustainability benefits.
