Natural gas supply chains, LNG trading, and energy sustainability strategies are increasingly shaped by methane emissions performance and verification. Centrica Energy has entered into a long-term agreement with Seneca Resources Company to procure methane emissions certificates linked to independently certified natural gas production in the United States.

The ten-year agreement covers the procurement of MiQ-certified methane emissions certificates corresponding to 250,000 MMBtu of natural gas per day. The arrangement is structured to support the measurement and continuous reduction of methane emissions over time, while embedding independently verified methane performance into Centrica’s global gas and LNG portfolio.

Linking gas supply to verified methane performance
Centrica Energy sources and delivers natural gas and LNG to markets worldwide, including LNG exported from the US. Under the agreement, methane performance associated with Seneca’s gas production is verified through certification by MiQ, which provides a data-driven grading framework for methane intensity across the natural gas value chain.

The use of MiQ-certified certificates allows methane emissions performance to be tracked independently of physical gas flows, enabling buyers to align procurement strategies with emissions reduction objectives and emerging regulatory expectations.

According to Arturo Gallego, Global Head of LNG at Centrica Energy, reducing methane emissions represents one of the most effective levers available to the energy sector for addressing climate impacts, and the agreement reflects a proactive approach to integrating methane performance into commercial decision-making.

Production-side methane management
Seneca Resources explores for and produces natural gas in the Appalachian region. The company has implemented methane mitigation measures including advanced monitoring, leak detection programs, and equipment upgrades. In 2022, Seneca achieved MiQ certification at the highest “A” grade across 100% of its production, indicating methane performance beyond baseline regulatory requirements.

Seneca’s President, Justin Loweth, noted that the certification reflects the application of emissions reduction technologies and practices intended to improve transparency and environmental stewardship across its operations.

Role of certification in methane accountability
MiQ’s certification framework assesses methane emissions using measurement-based data and standardized methodologies. The system is designed to support regulatory compliance, incentivize continuous improvement, and enable comparability of methane performance across producers and supply chains.

Georges Tijbosch, CEO of MiQ, stated that agreements of this type help integrate independently verified methane data into market mechanisms, strengthening accountability and encouraging emissions reductions throughout the oil and gas sector.

The long-term structure of the agreement positions methane certification as a recurring element of natural gas procurement, reflecting a shift toward incorporating emissions performance alongside traditional commercial criteria in energy markets.
