Power Grid Stability in High Renewables Networks

GE Vernova and Spanish power transmission utilities are collaborating to address operational grid stability and capacity balancing across the national electrical network. This joint initiative applies structured grid modeling and flexible system integration to support power generation in a market operating above 50 percent intermittent supply.

Operational Challenges in Distributed Generation
Spain expanded renewable sources to supply nearly 57 percent of its electricity in 2025, with expectations to exceed 80 percent by 2030. Concurrently, national electricity demand is projected to increase by 60 percent by 2050 due to industrial electrification.

The primary technical challenge involves operating the digital infrastructure under high inverter-based resource penetration. Displacing synchronous generators reduces natural system inertia, short-circuit levels, and dynamic reactive support. The operational consequences materialized during the April 2025 Iberian blackout, underscoring risks regarding reserve margins and frequency control. As wind and solar assets concentrate geographically, transmission bottlenecks cause high long-distance power flows, increasing local grid congestion and renewable curtailment risks.

Technical Framework and System Balancing
To maintain system strength, GE Vernova evaluated four architectural pathways: Business-as-Usual, Progressive, Pioneering, and Lower-Carbon. Total wind and photovoltaic assets are modeled to scale between 150 GW and 250 GW by 2050.

The technical findings confirm that high-renewables operation requires 15 to 20 percent of overall system capacity to remain firm and dispatchable. Operational responsibilities are shared between generation technology developers and transmission operators. Utilities coordinate high-voltage network expansions, while GE Vernova engineers frequency response strategies, synchronous condensers, and battery energy storage integrations. Long-duration energy storage, hydrogen generation, carbon capture, and nuclear life extensions provide the required firm capacity to absorb low-resource periods and balance active power variations.

Deployment and Infrastructure Integration
Implementation centers on coordinated transmission reinforcement, substations, and dispatchable balancing units across critical Iberian grid nodes. The engineering focus targets market-based ancillary services, reactive power regulation, and fast frequency response mechanisms at points of interconnection. This phased engineering integration aligns generation sites directly with reinforced transmission corridors, limiting line losses and curtailment.

Industry Applications and Grid Reliability
The deployment directly supports national transmission utilities, heavy industrial electricity consumers, and renewable plant operators. Concrete applications include primary frequency containment, black-start capabilities, and voltage regulation across high-voltage distribution networks. The resulting operational stability reduces voltage sags, manages thermal overloads on transmission lines, and prevents cascaded trip sequences during sudden loss-of-generation events.

"The challenge now is not whether the country can achieve its ambitions, but how to build a power system that keeps pace with them, one that is as reliable and resilient as it is sustainable," stated Jaime Elguero, Country Manager, Spain, GE Vernova.

Maintaining firm, dispatchable capacity alongside coordinated transmission investment ensures scalable system margins as intermittent resources expand toward net-zero thresholds.
