Connected Chillers for Building Automation

Johnson Controls is implementing factory-installed digital connectivity in its centrifugal chillers. The system captures over two hundred specific operational data points to establish technical parameters during commissioning and to validate performance baselines. Continuous data transmission monitors the system's condition, enabling the remote identification of deviations in the operational behavior of the equipment. Following the initial rollout for centrifugal chillers, the system architecture will be gradually expanded to models with screw and scroll compressors.

Digital Infrastructure and System Architecture
The systems are connected to the cloud-based OpenBlue platform. This digital infrastructure utilizes algorithms for advanced fault detection and diagnostics. The system analyzes the operational behavior of the integrated equipment in real-time and compares the captured sensor data against defined thresholds. If these parameters are exceeded or if irregularities occur, the system automatically generates warning notifications to prevent malfunctions through predictive maintenance before disturbances in the system cycle arise.

Quantifiable Impact on Operations
The integration of digital operational analytics leads to an increase in system reliability and operational efficiency. Continuous condition monitoring reduces unplanned service calls by up to 32 percent. By identifying the smallest changes in performance, physical machine downtime is minimized, and personnel and cost deployments are stabilized. "Chillers are among the most critical assets in buildings. Even minor performance deviations can impair availability and significantly increase lifecycle costs," explains Michael Daimer, General Manager HVAC & IREF, Central Europe at Johnson Controls.
