Energy Storage Systems and TOPCon Modules for Solar Installations

JA Solar will showcase a new generation of energy storage systems and TOPCon-based photovoltaic modules at Intersolar Europe 2026, taking place in Munich from 23 to 25 June. The company will present a utility-scale energy storage platform, a commercial and industrial storage solution, and an updated portfolio of high-efficiency solar modules.

These developments reflect JA Solar’s evolution from a photovoltaic module manufacturer into a provider of integrated energy solutions capable of combining power generation and energy storage to support growing demands for grid flexibility and self-consumption optimization.

Utility-Scale Energy Storage with Capacity Exceeding 5 MWh
One of the main highlights is JAGalaxy, an energy storage system designed for grid-connected renewable energy projects. The system offers more than 5 MWh of storage capacity and a round-trip efficiency of 93%, supporting improved renewable energy integration and large-scale grid balancing.

The architecture incorporates multi-layer protection systems with millisecond-level response times, real-time monitoring, and a three-tier fire detection and suppression system. Its modular design has been developed to simplify maintenance and improve operational reliability in large-scale installations.

LFP Storage Systems for Commercial and Industrial Applications
JA Solar will also present JAPlanet, an energy storage platform designed for commercial and industrial (C&I) installations. Introduced at the end of 2025 and already deployed at several sites across Europe, the system uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with a storage capacity of 261 kWh and integrates a 125 kW power conversion system.

The platform can be scaled up to 20 units, achieving a total storage capacity of 5.2 MWh. AC-side round-trip efficiency reaches up to 88%, while the liquid-cooling system maintains cell temperatures within ±1.5°C, helping to preserve battery performance and extend operational life.

From a safety perspective, the system is certified to the UL9540A standard and incorporates real-time insulation monitoring, thermal runaway detection, and a three-level fire protection system. The expected lifetime includes at least 8,000 operating cycles or retention of 80% state of health. Artificial intelligence-based algorithms support predictive maintenance and advanced diagnostics.

High-Efficiency TOPCon Modules for Distributed Solar Generation
In the solar generation segment, JA Solar will present its DeepBlue 5.0 and DeepBlue 4.0 Pro module series, both based on n-type TOPCon cell technology. TOPCon has become one of the leading photovoltaic technologies due to its higher conversion efficiency and lower degradation rates compared with conventional PERC technologies.

The DeepBlue 5.0 series includes bifacial dual-glass modules designed for operation in challenging environmental conditions and low-irradiance scenarios. The JAM48D50/LR model delivers up to 670 W of output power with an efficiency of 24.8%, making it suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial installations.

The DeepBlue 4.0 Pro portfolio includes n-type dual-glass modules designed for residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale projects. The series offers efficiencies of up to 22%, a 30-year power warranty, and an annual degradation rate of only 0.3%.

Integrated Energy Ecosystems for the Energy Transition
According to Alastair Mounsey, Vice President Europe at JA Solar, the market is increasingly shifting toward integrated energy ecosystems that combine photovoltaic generation and energy storage. The objective of the new platforms is to increase operational flexibility, improve grid resilience, and maximize the value generated by solar installations.

The convergence of high-efficiency solar modules and advanced energy storage systems represents one of the key development trends in the photovoltaic industry, particularly in European markets characterized by increasing renewable energy penetration and growing demand for grid stabilization services.

Additional Context: This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement

In the utility-scale segment, energy storage systems exceeding 5 MWh compete with platforms such as Tesla Megapack, Fluence Gridstack, and Sungrow PowerTitan. Key benchmarking criteria include energy capacity, round-trip efficiency, energy density, fire safety performance, and ease of maintenance. The stated 93% round-trip efficiency of JAGalaxy places it within the upper range of large-scale stationary battery systems.

In the commercial and industrial segment, LFP battery technology has become the preferred standard due to its superior thermal stability and long operational life compared with other lithium-ion chemistries. The 8,000-cycle lifespan specified for JAPlanet is consistent with premium C&I energy storage systems currently available on the market.

For photovoltaic modules, n-type TOPCon technology is being adopted by manufacturers including LONGi, JinkoSolar, Trina Solar, and Canadian Solar. Current-generation TOPCon modules generally achieve efficiencies between 23% and 25%, making the 24.8% efficiency of the JAM48D50/LR module competitive within the high-efficiency solar module segment.

The integration of energy storage systems and photovoltaic modules into a unified energy platform reflects a growing industry trend aimed at optimizing self-consumption, reducing grid dependency, and supporting the stability of power systems with increasing shares of renewable energy generation.
