Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is developing carbon dioxide capture and utilization (CCU) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) systems targeting industrial manufacturing and atmospheric decarbonization. These engineering initiatives address decentralized carbon recycling for manufacturing facilities and ocean-based extraction to manage unavoidable industrial emissions.

Decentralized Carbon Capture and On-Site Recycling
Industrial production facilities with low to medium output often face capital constraints that prevent the implementation of large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) infrastructure requiring underground geological transport networks. To address this technical challenge, Mitsubishi Electric is engineering modular CCU systems structured around on-site capture and immediate localized conversion.

The mechanism processes point-source carbon dioxide directly at small- and medium-scale industrial plants. Once separated from exhaust streams, the gas is routed through chemical conversion pathways to produce secondary commodities, including industrial chemicals and synthetic fuels. This localized processing architecture eliminates the logistical dependencies and high capital expenditure associated with regional transport pipelines and deep-well injection infrastructure.

Direct Ocean Capture Mechanisms for Net-Negative Emissions
In parallel with point-source capture, the development scope includes direct ocean capture (DOC) systems engineered to remove carbon dioxide already dissolved in marine environments. Because surface seawater maintains chemical equilibrium with the atmosphere, extracting dissolved inorganic carbon from ocean water drives continuous atmospheric carbon removal.

The DOC architecture utilizes marine absorption properties to extract dissolved gas phases without requiring extensive land-based direct air capture installations. This operational framework targets dispersed and legacy atmospheric emissions that cannot be mitigated through conventional point-source flue gas filtration.

Industrial Deployment and Technical Exhibition
The technical frameworks, process architectures, and developmental phases for these CCU and DOC systems are scheduled for presentation at the Carbon Capture Technology World Expo from October 20 to 22, 2026, at Hamburg Messe in Hamburg, Germany (Hall B4L, Booth 4B40).

The integration of on-site utilization modules and marine extraction frameworks provides an operational pathway for industrial automation and manufacturing sectors to deploy tailored decarbonization systems across disparate operational scales.
